Why my garmin connect is defaulted to a mainland China version?

So idk why but my garmin connect is defaulted to a mainland china version regardless which app store I downloaded from.

Thus I cannot connect my garmin connect to other apps such as strava or myfitness pal.

Is it because my fenix 7 is bought in China?

Since the app itself is defaulted to mainland China, create a new account won't solve the problem.

And I suspect this is the reason why when I log in to https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity-sync, it shows nothing.

Need some serious help to escape this *** hole.

  • Is it because my fenix 7 is bought in China?

Rather because you registered the device there, or created the Garmin Connect account on the Chinese servers, that are completely isolated from the rest of the world (due to governmental requirements related to the censorship).

If you want to have the standard non-Chinese account, you have to create one. If you are located in China you will probably have to use a VPN, or travel abroad. Then change the location of your global Garmin account at https://www.garmin.com/en-US/account/profile/ (double check that it is on the domain garmin.com, and not garmin.cn !!!). Now, it may be easier creating your Garmin Connect account on the web than with the app, so open GC web at https://connect.garmin.com/ and create a new account, preferably with a different email than you did with the Chinese GC.

Once you created the new account on GC Web, first of all remove your watch from the GC mobile app, then sign out of it, sign in back with the new account credential, and add your watch. You should be all fine now, although the account will be practically empty, and you will have to start anew. Some metrics and activity that are still on the watch, may get synced to the new account, but it won't be possible to move all of it. Activities could be exported from the old account, and imported to the new one.

  • Thanks mate, I am living Aus. I've found there is a tricky button on the IOS GC login page that allows the user to switch region. I changed the region to Australia and now I am free!
