Garmin Coach has a Run Walk Run training plan (author: Coach Jeff) but doesn't implement the Run/Walk intervals in the Run Walk Run workouts even though that's the core part of the whole training approach.

This must make Coach Jeff sad.

So I started the 5K run-walk-run training plan, but found that the workout for Run Walk Run only contained a Run step with a Duration Type of Distance 1m. So I guess I'm expected to just time this on my own and keep looking at my watch?

So I guess maybe Garmin Connect doesn't have the ability to configure a workout to do repeats of two different steps (Run and Walk) until some other duration type is met, like distance 1m, and can only specify a number of repetitions.

So I tried using a Run/Walk alert which is configured within the Run activity only to find that this alert type (or perhaps all alerts?) are disabled for activities during workouts.

Also see here (other thread) for more detail.

I'm posting this here just because I'm not sure what can be done to work around this difficulty within the Garmin Connect app, and what's going to require both firmware improvements and corresponding improvements to the Garmin Connect app.

  • Anyone else run into this? There's this old post https://forums.garmin.com/apps-software/mobile-apps-web/f/garmin-connect-web/308420/create-a-fit-file-for-the-garmin-jeff-training-plans-run-walk-run-sessions where someone has a workaround involving manually editing the FIT files using the FIT SDK, but that's a lot of trouble unless someone is a developer of apps for these watches.

  • Perhaps simply no intervals are set for that specific workout, and you should just run-walk-run the distance freely, in the way you want. What exactly does the description of the workout tell? Can you post a screenshot of the workout details?

  • Same here. I started the plan today. I manually started the walk setting for 2 mins. Then manually started Run and afterwards switched to Walk for cool down.

Seems like there should be a setting for Garmin coach along with all the other activities.

im a long time runner but was curious about the Galloway program since I’m a fitness instructor. I know there are other apps but I don’t want another app. I like garmin because it’s all in one place.

    suggestions?

  • I found a data field in Garmin IQ that works pretty good with the Galloway program.  It adds a data field measuring run/walk time that you can show on you watch.  It's configurable to different times (default is run 2:00 / walk 0:30).  I changed mine to run 240 (seconds) / walk 30 (seconds).  It works with any workout labeled run/walk but has a setting to work with any workout that you add the data field to.  It's called "Garmin Coach Companion: Jeff Galloway" and the author is bderusha.  You can find it by going to the Garmin IQ store and seaching "Galloway".   After downloading this, the way to add this new data field to your runs is to go to Run Setting on your watch, select Data Screens, select Add New, select Custom Data, select Field 1, select Connect IQ fields, select Jeff Galloway Coach companion D, and select up or down button to place the new data screen where you want it located on your watch when you run.

  • I manually started the walk setting for 2 mins. Then manually started Run and afterwards switched to Walk for cool down.

You are not supposed to start a Walk activity, or switching activities, when doing a Running Coach Plan. You just start the scheduled workout from the Training » Workouts menu of the Run activity (or from the Workouts widget), and follow the instructions. When it tells you to do the Run-Walk-Run, you just do it for the prescribed time or distance, switching from running to walking to keep the recommended HR or pace. Or your feelings, if there is no target HR or pace.

Recent watch models will show you the walk and run intervals automatically on a graph in the activity stats in Garmin Connect:
