Is there a way to turn off news notifications (sky news, bbc news etc) from apps on my phone coming through to my forerunner 945?

Yes, there is: go to iOS Settings » Notifications, scroll to the app sending you the notifications, open it, and disable the Notification Center option there. Keep the other options unchanged, if you wish to continue receiving the notifications on the phone self.
