You do not need to install Garmin Instinct 2 - it is a watch (hardware), not an app (software). You can use it standalone without any Garmin Connect account, if you wish. However, he'll lose all the reporting and stats, and will only be able to review the data and reports accessible directly on the watch. He'll also not be able to download and install any firmware updates (apart of side-loading firmware accessible on the Beta Program platform), without a Garmin Connect account. The account is needed also when connecting over the USB cable to Garmin Express.

Thank you, very helpful. I set my suns watch without an Garmin account and it works perfectly.
