HRV - weekly average lower than lowest day. Am I reading this wrong?

you’ll notice today’s overnight average was 38, but the 7 day average hit a low of 34, even though the overnight average never hit below 35.

is this a bug or am i reading this wrong?

also, is this Garmin’s way of telling me i’m dying? i feel fine. a little tired, but this hrv descent worries me.

Yes, you read it wrong. The first graph shows 7 days rolling averages for each of the past 7 days. To view the overnight values on that graph, press the button Overnight Averages.

Fatigue, stress, training, seasonal changes (and other factors like alcohol, coffee, food,...) decrease the HRV. As long as you have a pulse, you are still living.

  • ah, ok, thank you! sir some reason i thought it was a nighttime reading only.

    this makes sense. thanks again!

That's correct - all those values, both the overnight averages, as well as the 7d averages (should be actually labeled 7 nights averages) come from the nighttime reading only. Though, perhaps I am wrong in this - would have to check a longer set of data to see whether it is that case or not.

  • ok, so, i guess i'm still confused. if the overnight average is never 34 (the lowest it got was 35), how does the 7-day rolling average hit 34?

  • You would have to post the overnight averages for the past two weeks. For example on Jan 10, the value was 34, and if it was even lower before that, the 7d average could be that low too. That's why I wrote you would have to enter a larger set of data into an Excel table, and calculate the rolling 7d average for the last days.

  • ah, you're right, the week before my overnight hits 32, 31, and 34 - i missed that. makes sense. thank you!
