Indoor Cycling Edit for Miles and Manually Synch to Strava

I am did an indoor cycling ride on a Life Fitness bike. I'm not connected to LIfe Fitness and I am not trying to connect to Life Fitenss. Using the Fenix 7 watch, my I recorded my ride and it automatically exported to Strava. However, it understandably does not show distance since I am not connected to the bike. I was hoping I could just edit for distance in Strava, but that is not an option after the auto synch. I went into Garmin Connect and edited miles, but that does not show up in Strava. My question is how can I most easily edit for distance and connect to Strava after these rides?

I'd like to do it from my phone, but it looks like I need to export the Original or TCX form my laptop. However, I don't know which one will show my edited miles. It seems like it should be much easier than this after I initially edit it in Connect. It seems like I should just be able to re-share it with Strava?

Any help appreciated!

The easiest way to get the right distance from an indoor bike to Garmin Connect and to Strava, is by connecting the speed & distance sensor of the bike to the watch. If your indoor bike does not have any such sensor, then I recommend buying Garmin's Speed Sensor 2 (or another similar sensor from a 3rd party) and mounting it on the flywheel of the bike. That's what I did with my vintage indoor bike that originally had only a mechanical tacho, too. It works perfectly, and costs almost nothing.

  • That sounds like an excellent solution. I'm using a bike at the gym, so I don't want to mess around with their equipment, but it sounds like the way to go for a personal bike; thanks for offering a solution.

Maybe it's just a Strava issue. I think what I will try is disconnecting the auto synch from Connect. Then, after my ride, I will edit the ride in Connect to add the mileage (The bicycle records the mileage in case I did not make that clear). Then, after I edit it in Connect for mileage, I will synch it.

I would think that I would be able to re-synch an edited ride, but that is not the case apparently right now, so I will have edit before the synch even happens.

    Thanks for your suggestion!

Yes, editing the ride in Garmin Connect impacts only the data shown in Connect. The exported files still contain the original data like it came from the device. You would need to edit the exported activity with an external tool.

  • Thanks for the advice. What would be an example of the an external tool?

  • As for the FIT file, you'd need something like the Fit File Repair Tool. For the TCX or GPX formats, a simple text editor like the Notepad would be sufficient, but you'd need to have some experience with editing these XML files.
