Intensity minutes not including indoor workouts.

I did a VO2max workout in Zwift this morning and got 0 intensity minutes in GC.

Looking back though my GC calendar, I have not been getting any intensity minute credit during indoor (Zwift) rides in the past month.  October 30th was the last indoor ride that I received intensity minutes from.  I have had multiple outdoor activities since then with intensity minutes, but none of the indoor rides have.  Zwift is synced directly to GC.

I don't necessarily track intensity minutes, but I don't know if they are used in other behind the scenes calculations so just throwing this out there...

  • You get intensity minutes only if you wear your watch or use a device compatible with the feature (i.e. Edge 1040 + HRM). IMs are based on the HR, and do not depend whether you record an activity or not, and it also does not matter what type of activity to record. 3rd party apps do not calculate and do not send any IMs to Garmin Connect.

Apart from the Fitness Age, I do not think they are used anywhere

  • My Garmin HRM Dual data is recorded by Zwift and sent to GC.  My Zwift ride for October 30th triggered intensity minutes to be calculated in GC.  My Zwift rides since then have not...  Seems pretty simple for Garmin to look at the synced data and calculate IM for all activities that have HR data, otherwise IM is completely irrelevant to anything.

ETA: I wear my Garmin Instinct Solar while doing the workouts as well.  I don't record the workout on it, but I have other non-recorded outdoor activities that will trigger IM too,

HRM Dual does not support the feature of Intensity Minutes, only HRM-Pro does (when the wrist HRM is off).

Your Instinct uses the internal wrist HR sensor, which can differ from the chest belt quite a bit. Besides that it samples and averages the HR only once each 15s (and logs each 2 minutes). Check the all-day HR graph and see whether the HR meets the conditions for some IMs. At some of your past rides it might have been the case, but apparently no at the recent ones. The value of your 7 days average Resting HR plays an important role in it too. So if it is higher now, than it used to be, getting the IMs is harder now.

All processing happens on the watch. There is no postprocessing in Garmin Connect, or on the servers. You need to use you watch. So if you want to get accurate data from a Zwift ride, connect the HRM Dual to Instinct, and record the ride with it. Or buy the HRM-Pro instead of the Dual, and remove the watch from your wrist while using Zwift. Those are the only ways how to get accurate all-day HR and IMs during an activity recorded with a 3rd party app.
