Base vs tempo vs vo2

I ride 6 X a week, mostly inside now on my smart trainer.  I use Trainerroad for my workouts. Every ride, with very few  exemptions, are classified as BASE.  Essentially riding in zone 2 power.  

This week I did a tempo/sweet spot workout (zone 3), a threshold workout (zone 4) and a VO2 max workout (zone 5).  My zones in garmin all showed more power and HR in the upper zones. My zones are correct in garmin as well. How does Garmin determine whether the training effect was base, or tempo or vo2 max?  There's no way any of these rides should be base. In the grand scheme of things, it' really doesn't matter but it bugs me when connect keeps telling me my workouts are unproductive AND I need more high aerobic work! 

Any insight?
