I have read the on line reasons for swim PR’s to only show for pool swims. But surely for us open water swimmers the longest swims in open water should count? Any thoughts please?

Personal records

  • I do 95% OW swimming, but the conditions differ so much that any records are absolutely pointless. Depending on the weather, wind, current, waves, I can do effortlessly 2km in 20 minutes, as well as in 2 hours with big troubles, and the same goes for the distance. Even more apparent it is when you OW swim in a river - swim upstream and you can make 0 distance with a max effort, or 10 km with zero effort when just floating downstream. Records make no sense for OW swimming. Only the HR based data from the OW swim is of some interest. Preferably from a chest strap.

  • Thanks Trux

I was only thinking of still bodies of water, as most of my swims are in a local quarry (1k) loops.

    Good points thank you.

I had just found my PB page and was a little disappointed at it claiming 2k max after a 5k 16 degree swim today.

    Where are you based?

I am in the midlands UK.

    all the best Wilf
