Garmin Connect IOS - Energy per Workout label issue

Yesterday I noticed An issue with labels in the connect app (after the latest major upgrade in look and feel etc).

Did a zwift ride for about 1h, so typically this uses between 500-800Kcal of energy consumption.

Now, suddenly in the app this is no longer listed as Kcal but as kj which is a huge difference (a factor of 4,18 to be more precise, 1 kcal = 4,18kJ).

When you check the Strava data dashboard it shows the same value but with kcal as expected.

  • Frankly told, at the avg. power of 159 W during 57 minutes, it represents some 150 Wh, which is approximately 540 kJ or ~130 kCal. So from this point of view, the 537 kJ in GC for the Work seems to be much more credible than 537 kCal in Strava.

On the other hand, Strava may be referring to the Active Calories burned - due to the efficiency of the human body, the burned Active Calories may be pretty close to the value of Work in kJ. Generally, although not very accurate, the factor 1:1, instead of 4.184:1 is often used to convert Work to Active Calories.

Check out also the Active Calories burned in GC (calculated from the heart rate, not from the Work!) to see whether Strava may be rather referring to that value.

  • Damn, completely overlooked the active calories… must have been too tired already by that time :-)

thanks for the explanation. Was indeed searching for the active calories burned.
