Expedition challenges

I have a question regarding the climb challenges. I appreciate that the hike challenges are step related but I assumed that the climb one would be based on elevation. Can these challenges only be achieved on a step machine?  Today I ran up  540 ft of hills  and am disappointed that it hasn’t counted towards the challenge.

  • Can these challenges only be achieved on a step machine?

No, a step machine will not work. You need a watch with a barometric altimeter, though. It is the altimeter that is used for detecting the elevation gain for the altitude challenges, similarly as it is the case at the activity Floors Climbing, or for counting the daily climbed floors.

  • Thanks for replying. I have a watch with a barometric altimeter and it always tells me my elevation gains on runs etc.  that’s why I assumed it would log the 540 ft elevation that my watch logged on my run today.  I just won’t bother with the climb expeditions as if hill running doesn’t count there it’s no point RoflRofl

  • Having the elevation gain during logged activities does not mean the watch really has the barometric altimeter. It can also come from topographic data (from the GPS track). The elevation gain used for the altitude challenges can be better seen on the daily Floors page (https://connect.garmin.com/modern/daily-summary/2023-04-09/floors and https://connect.garmin.com/modern/report/53/wellness). One floor corresponds to 3 meters. Unlike the GPS based elevation, the floors are being counted round the clock, regardless whether an activity was logged or not.

Hill running certainly counts toward the altitude challenges. Just check how many floors were logged. If there are no floors, then the barometric altimeter is either not available, is not working, or it is disabled (i.e. set to the mode "barometer only")
