Apple Activity Rings not updating with Garmin workouts

I'm looking for some level of confirmation as to whether or not I'm doing something wrong in my setup.

I have a Fenix 7S watch that syncs with the Garmin Connect iOS app after ending my tennis training.

The training activities gets logged in the Apple Health app through the Garmin Connect app, but fails to move any rings in the Apple Fitness app.

Am I missing something obvious?

I have tried installing additional apps like Strava but I guess Strava requires the activity to be recorded on the app while performing the activity, and I never have the phone on me during workouts, only the Garmin Fenix 7S watch.

Garmin Connect iOS App v4.62.3 (23-Jan-2023)

  • This is still broken, but I am not sure it's a Garmin problem. I have only just moved to a Forerunner 965, and my previous Suunto 9 Baro exhibited exactly the same problem. The activities appear in the fitness app, but apple doesn't count them. I'm not 100% certain, but I believe activities from my Garmin Edge 840 do get counted (cycling).

  • I recently bought my first Garmin watch, a Forerunner 265. I was curious if it was even possible to get the Fitness rings to register with the Connect activity which is how I came across this thread. Everything is brand new, the watch, the Connect app, etc. I followed all of the instructions to send the data to Apple Health and I see the running workouts in Apple Fitness, but the rings are not moving at all. It would be fantastic to have the workouts move the Apple Fitness rings and have a Garmin Connect widget on iOS that shows where you are with your daily goals.

I'm on Connect App version 4.71.1.1, Forerunner 265 watch firmware 16.17, iOS 17.

  • It would be fantastic to have the workouts move the Apple Fitness rings

You need an Apple Watch for the rings to move. After Garmin Connect App have synchronized to Apple Health then open the Fitness App on Apple Watch and the data from a garmin will be populated to the Rings. If not owning an AW then I think you is out of luck. Garmin has said that this has to be fixed by Apple and that Garmin will not do anything from their side to fix this. Sorry to say but it is as it is is

  • The red ring absolutely updates based on cycling activities from Garmin devices. Running activities don't work, and they don't work from Suunto App either; seems like it is broken at Apple's end.

  • Actually this is not the case, my Garmin Forerunner745 was working perfectly fine without apple watch and then overnight it has stopped working with the activity and is only syncing steps and heart rate .. why did the rings stop updating overnight? thats the question I am asking

  • still not working, really disappointed in Garmin

  • This is never getting fixed folks, if Garmin developers think Apple needs to change their APIs then this is truly broke.

If a company supplies an API with a spec, you have to meet that spec not expect the company to change their spec because you collect your data differently. What happens when {insert Garmin competitor here} comes along and says meh, we want the API to work like how we collect *our* data. Ridiculous comment from Garmin.

Garmin staff in this chat asked for people to contact, I offered my details they didn't contact me, anyone actually get contacted? It seems clear Garmin cannot...or do not want to fix this.

  • The annoying thing is my partner has same watch same phone updated etc and he is still able to update his activity rings Shrug♀️very annoying

  • lol that is annoying, I've given up on activity app, probably not the right thing to do, just focusing on the garmin goals instead

  • anyone actually get contacted?

Yes, I was in discussion with Garmin support, they even created a ticket and we had a lot of information exchanged and I provided a lot of data with images. At the end Garmin claimed that the problem was not on their side and that their watch (Epix 2) behaved according to design and thus no fix. After that the ticket was closed. Was I happy with that - no, but I felt I did what I could and gave up on making the rings to move
