How can we merge easily data from Tacx training and data from Edge 1030 when doing a virtual training.

When doping a Tacx training activity — virtual session on roads — I am connecting my Tacx Smart Neo 2T with Tacx Companion and I use in parallel my EDGE 1030 — with indoor cycling activity.

At the end of the session, both activities are uploaded on Garmin Connect as separate, while this is the same activity. But some information are available on Tacx training while others are available on Edge, and both activities cannot be merged as one.

I would like to merge both activities to get all the data from both tools on one single Garmin connect activity.

How is it possible?

If not, can Garmin create a menu to merge them or make possible the merge of the same activity with data from 2 different Garmin tools (Tacs training companion and Garmin GPS)?

  • Does anyone have a recommendation/ solution for this? I have the same problem Tacx Neo 2 and edge 840 record as two separate rides, is there a way to combine or merge data from both files into only one?

  • From both files into one?

  • Hi, even though Garmin now owns Tacx, the Tacx app is still completely separate from Garmin devices and Garmin Connect, just like any 3rd-party training app. So the integration you're looking for doesn't exist yet.

Garmin currenty does support uploading rides from a limited list of authorized apps and will provide Training Status metrics for them: Zwift, Rouvy, TrainerRoad, Wahoo X/Systm/Sufferfest, and of course Tacx. But as you've noticed, you won't get all the metrics that your Garmin device provides.

Currently we need to use a 3rd-party tool (such as Fit File Repair Tool) to merge the FIT file data from the trainer app into the FIT file from our Garmin device, and then manually upload the new file to Garmin Connect to replace the original one. FFRT has instructions on their website to do this. Generally you import only the spatial data from the trainer app (position, distance, speed, and elevation) into the Garmin file, since the latter usually already has all the other parameters.

Also note it's probably best to avoid sending files from both the Garmin device and the trainer app to Garmin Connect since it causes duplicates that will distort your metrics. Sending the Garmin device file only to GC, and the trainer app file to Strava (if you use it), seems to work best for me. But I also use FFRT as above to merge the training app data into my Garmin file in GC.

  • Thank you Kyle, I will look into FFRT and see if it works for me. I'd like to keep the routes from virtual rides but not the end of the world if not possible. For whatever reasons, I've noticed some differences in metrics from virtual rides and the 840 so I've had to manually make adjustments.

Yes, I've noticed double entries distort my mileage totals but I usually delete one after making adjustments. I had the same problem with my Forerunner after I got the 840 so I stopped using it when I ride.

    Thanks again.

  • Hi, the duplicates don't just affect things like distance totals, they wreck havoc with your fitness metrics (Training Status, etc) and it can't be undone by editing or deleting one of the duplicates. Some fitness metrics are based on 4 weeks of data so it can take a long time to clear out the "contamination" from duplicates. It's best to avoid sending duplicate files to Garmin Connect entirely.

As for differences on virtual rides, the spatial data (position, distance, speed, and elevation) will never match those in the virtual ride apps (except by pure coincidence). Any such data that your Edge records from your trainer is meaningless. You can manually edit the Edge activity to have the values shown in the ride app, but you'll still be missing the map of course. FFRT lets you import all that spatial data from the virtual ride into the Edge activity, but it's a personal call whether it's worth the effort. (I do it for every indoor ride, only takes a few minutes each time.)

  • Thanks again Kyle. Do you know of an equivalent FFRT for Mac? I currently only have Garmin Connect set up on my Mac but could set it up on PC as well if there isn't a suitable alternate.

  • Hi, I don't know if FFRT has a Mac version but you could contact them on their website to ask.

You should be able to access the Garmin Connect website from a browser on any device.
