Watch Will No Longer Stay Connected, and no longer displays the correct time

I don't know what's up.

Ever since updating to the latest ios 16.1 my watch no longer keeps time nor does it stay connected reliably. It drops the connection after I'm outside for a few minutes and at home.

It will only sync after being plugged in for several minutes (the battery is not drained; I got it reconnected and syncing just now, it was at 60% battery). 

Further, the time is now always wrong and the watch drops its connection when I try to align the hands, even when plugged in at home or when connected; see the attached video. 

At this point the watch is unusable even as a time piece. I have tried: 

  • turning both devices on and off
  • updating software
  • removing the device from Connect, forgetting device on phone bluetooth settings, restarting phone and then and adding the watch again
  • uninstalling connect after removing the device and forgetting on bluetooth, reinstalling and adding the watch again
  • All of the above with watch reset to factory settings

Is my watch broken?
