Why doesn’t heart rate data captured on cycling computers show up in Garmin Connect daily heart rate data?

I have a Garmin Edge 830 (with heart rate strap) and a Phoenix 7 watch. My heart rate data for the whole day shows up when i am wearing my watch but if i take it off to go for a long ride no data is then uploaded to the Garmin connect daily heart rate charts. My heart rate is captured or the activity via my Edge and shows up in the activity, i don't get why it wouldn't just show up in the daily heart rate data.

Surely it would just be like capturing an activity on the watch that then uploads the data, not sure why it doesn’t do the same.

It basically make the average heart rate analysis pointless since it doesn’t tak into consideration anything captured via a cycling computer. Surely this impacts body battery, average heart rate figures and recovery metrics.

  • Well, it is because of the way the data storage is designed on the devices (activities and daily monitoring data completely independent and isolated). I do not tell it is all right, but it is certain it will not change easily any time soon. So if you want to get the HR into your daily stats, and do not want to keep the watch on your wrist while cycling, keep the watch with you anyway (in the pocket, backpack, handlebar mount,...), and add the HRM belt to it as a sensor too (it can be connected to multiple devices in the same time).

Another option is using the HRM-Pro strap. It records the daily HR too. It just needs to be added to Garmin Connect as a device too.

Thanks for the quick response, I had suspected as much. The devices should just be collection tools with connect mastering the data and feeding back to the whole family of devices. Just a really poor data model for anyone who has more than one activity interest.

The point is though that if your buying Garmin products they should all integrate seamlessly, they don’t.

Buying another product and carrying both around is a workaround, just not a very practical one.

Yes, you are right, but that's also why it is better not mixing it with other brands - if you used the HRM-Pro strap from Garmin, you would not have this problem.

  • ... also, there is certain progress at newer Edges. I am not sure how it is with the all-day HR at the last models like Edge Explore 2 and Edge 1040, but unlike older Edge models, they already do support some of the all-day monitoring data - namely Intensity Minutes, and burned Calories. I do not see whether the all-day HR is supported too, but I can imagine it is, or can be added relatively easier than at the old models.

I do use a Garmin heart rate strap, just not the pro. The Edge cycling computer captures the heart rate data from the Garmin monitor.

Yes, Edge 830 supports the Calories, not the Intensity Minutes, though:
