Calories displayed on Fitness App change from 1 day to another!

I have updated the ios, and finally now able to see the "calories" ring for Fitness app on ios synching with the Garmin watch (Vivoactive 4S).

Every day, it displays burned calories, and on the next day, the previous day calories are reduced to almost 3/4 the previous day! What is this strange bug, and how to get it fixed?

Example:

Today: calories are 572/500 are done

Tomorrow: data for today become: 356/500 are done

What happens?!

  • What happens?!

Good question, but I am not sure anyone here can answer it. It might be better asking the developers of the Fitness app - only they would know how it works.

  • Based on a comment I read elsewhere I suspect that Garmin Connect updated/changed one or more entries from the day before.   Considering the mess I get if I try to allow Connect to write to Health, this wouldn't surprise me.  (and I hope it's not their answer to the duplicate data they write.

Fitness is simply a front end for the data stored in HealthKit. If you want to figure out what is going on here, at the end of the day go into the Health app (not Fitness), hit the browse button, then Activity. You should see a value for ""Active Energy".  if you tap it and then scroll down you will see an option to "Show All Data". That will take you to a list of days.  Click on today.  That will show you every value that every device has written to HealthKit. The next day go back and look again (picking the same day obviously).  Something will have changed.  Whatever it was is what is causing your issue.   I suspect (but haven't tested) that Garmin is deleting some calories overnight for some reason. I have tested and know that they duplicate the count regularly.

My overall advice is not to try and use a Garmin Device to populate anything other than Steps and Heart Rate in HealthKit (which won't close Fitness rings).  Sleep works to as long as you don't care about Stages. Weight might work, I don't know as I use Withings. But, everything else I've tested causes more problems than good.  If you buy a Garmin device, you are pretty much locked into connect for any health info unless they have a direct connection to another service you use.

  • This is a known bug that Garmin refuses to fix. If you do an activity during the day, Garmin Connect write incorrect (too high) Active Energy to Apple Health. However, the next day it corrects the previous days value…at least some times. Other times it just create a new entry for the previous day without cleaning up the incorrect value - resulting in av ever more incorrect activity value. The integration is a complete train wreck, and has been for a long time! If you try to loose weight based on calories reported by Garmin in Apple Health, it will be a frustrating process for sure.
