Training Effect always shows Tempo runs, Base runs not possible.

Since a couple of weeks (after one of the recent updates) almost every run I do ends up being a Tempo run or higher intensity. Regardless of my exercertion level. I have set my own heart rate zones based on a sport specific treadmill test with a doctor. I set up these zones almost a year ago, so this did not cause the change.
Even if I run my whole run in lower end of z2 I end up with a Tempo run (see the attached example). This really skews my training load, so it makes all training suggestions quite useless. I use a Fenix 6 Pro with a Garmin HRM chest band. So I expect accurate readings. I hope this issue gets fixed very soon.

  • What are your Max HR and LTHR values (as shown in the user settings on the device)?

  • Even if I run my whole run in lower end of z2 I end up with a Tempo run (see the attached example). This really skews my training load, so it makes all training suggestions quite useless.

I do not think that the label can skew your training load in any way. It is just a verbose interpretation of the effort. What is important are the aerobic and anaerobic values, and their ratio.

You did not show what the anaerobic effect was in this case, so it is hard to make any conclusions. However, if you are getting some anaerobic effect (detected with the help of HR Variability) while never having the HR above Z2, then the zone may not correspond well to the reality (despite being measured in the lab). Another possibility is that the HRV is detected too low for some other reason, or that the LTHR value is set too low in your User Settings, and taking over the HRV detection.

  • These are 190 and 170 respectively.

  • What I meant is that 1 minute of tempo training results in a higher load compared to 1 minute of base training. Of coarse I can not see if this is the result of the label, or of the actual heartrate or training effect measure.

In the case of this run, the anaerobic effect was 0,0. Which corresponds to how it felt :).

  • Looks all right, although Garmin sets the upper limit of Z4 always a few beats below the LTHR. However, I do not think it would change anything, since you were nowhere close to the LT anyway.

I am little bit afraid that nobody (including Garmin) can tell whether the aerobic effect of 3.0 was all right or not, because Firstbeat writes "The Firstbeat Analytics method for transforming heartbeat data into EPOC values relies on neural networks and machine learning techniques borrowed from the world of artificial intelligence" [ source ], which translated to common English means that nobody knows what it actually does, and how it concluded the results.

You could try resetting the watch and see whether something then changes. First I'd try only the soft-reset by holding the Light button for some 20s. If you see after a few runs, that it does not help, then the master reset to factory defaults may perhaps re-initialize the AI features, and make it learning from the scratch again (and hopefully better).

  • What watch are you using? Did this just start in the last week or so? There was a "bug" across most devices with the most recent Firmware sent out it seems. There is a revised beta (for 955 anyway) that I supposed to address this issue.

  • Thanks, I will give this a go!

  • The Fenix 6Pro. I will see if a soft or hard reset wil solve the problem.

  • I'm having the same issue. I ran for half an hour in HR zone 1 this morning which resulted in a "tempo" run and no increase in Low Aerobic. Keeps resulting in the watch recommending only "base" runs. Fenix 6pro

  • On the latest Beta or the Current release? (not sure how it relates to the FR955 release numbers , 12.23 was a mess , 12.25 Beta tried to correct)
