If you do not see the steps on the watch either, try restarting the watch. If they are there, but do not synct to Garmin Connect, although other data goes through OK, then have a look at the Troubleshooting guide for (some) data missing after syncing - Garmin Connect Web - Mobile Apps & Web - Garmin Forums, especially the tip #4.
Didn‘t even sync the time
For syncing the time you have to go out and either start the GPS, or an outdoor activity such as for example Walk.
Still problems with syncing
If nothing syncs at all, then look rather at the Sync / Connection Troubleshooting Guide for even more tips, although mostly for Android, but some may apply to iPhones too.
