Why does my new Fenix 7X Sapphire Solar wrist HR work only sporadically?

I just got a Fenix 7X Sapphire Solar. The wrist HR monitor only provides a reading sporadically. I’ve restarted the watch, repositioned it on my wrist, changed wrists, read the troubleshooting provided by Garmin, to no avail. It’s giving me a reading for an hour straight, nothing for a few minutes, reading for a few minutes, and then nothing for a while. It’s very frustrating.

Check this out though. Before this, I had a Fenix 6X and the same thing happened repeatedly. I contacted Garmin Support multiple times. They did troubleshooting but were unable to identify the cause. I exchanged the watch 3 times until I finally requested a refund.

Each time I’ve returned to my trusty 5x Plus. It’s a workhorse. No issues at all BUT it’s a few years old. I want a new watch. I want the additional functionality and storage of the 7x.

I’m just so disappointed and frustrated. Has anyone else experienced this and how did you resolve the issue. Please help!!!

  • Strange indeed. It could be a physiological issue - either too dark skin, tattoos, too thick epidermis, very low hemoglobin levels, vasoconstriction or another problem with the blood circulation. Perhaps the modern models are slightly less powerful than the F5, hence having problems with the weak signal. Did you try changing the hands, using the inner side of the wrist, different levels of tightness, or even attaching the watch to your ankle (just for the testing)?
