When there is no map, it means the GS did not work for some reason. If you started an outdoor activity and did not turn the GPS off, or did not use a power mode profile, disabling the GPS, then the most common reason is an expired or corrupted ephemeris data file. Connect the watch with the USB cable to the computer, and check for updates with Garmin Express. GPS cannot work reliably and quickly without fresh ephemeris data, and the download over Garmin Connect when you start the activity can easily fail, hence getting it over the cable from Garmin Connect is safer.
