So frustrated with this POS software; can't transfer ride through any means

I have a Garmin Edge 820 and I'm away from home, not my normal network (although frequent problems there too.) But today has just pushed me over the edge. Did a mountainous 42-mile ride, and can't get the data off my phone.

  • I plug it into my 2021 MB Pro, with the newest update of Garmin Express, and a cable I know functions. I've tried it on all three USB ports, and it never connects however long I leave it. It'll charge that way, so I know the connection is good, and I've tested the cable with other things.
  • I've tried syncing it with my iPhone 12 (latest updates and software.) It connects fine, but won't sync, generating the "your device seems to be busy" time out error. OK.
  • I tried connecting it to the local wifi by manually typing in the password on the Edge 820. That was a PITA, and wouldn't connect. So,
  • I tried connecting to the local wifi by using Garmin Connect on my phone to add a new network. My phone and laptop both connect to the wifi fine, and I'm copy/pasting the wifi password, so it's not a spelling error. It seems to work, and says "This will test your Garmin device's connection to the network. It may take several seconds." I hit "connect," and it immediately says "something went wrong. Try again."

I've done all of these things several times. I've rebooted my phone, the apps, the Edge 820, nothing. Bupkis.

Any suggestions? I love Garmin devices... but the software is such a POS, I can't recommend them anymore.

Does Edge appear as an external drive in the file manager of the computer? The USB charging wires and contacts are not the same ones used for the data, so make sure you tested also the data transfer with that cable. Also try soft resetting your Edge (https://www8.garmin.com/manuals/webhelp/edge820/EN-US/GUID-46A06A7C-1F46-4DBA-B010-DAD7BA6BE59E.html), and preferably also rebooting the computer, if you did not try it already.

Not sure about Edge 820, but Garmin watches I tried, won't connect over BT, when you are connected over the USB cable, so make sure you unplugged it, first. If you did not reset the Edge, as advised above, do it now. Also try forcing the GCM app to stop (swipe it up in the App Switcher), and start anew. Garmin's support website advises to remove the device and pair again, in such case: Device Is Busy Error During Edge Sync With the Connect App

Does the local WiFi router meet the requirements listed in the Wi-Fi FAQ? You indeed have to add the new wifi directly on the device, because if you add it on Garmin Connect or on Garmin Express, they cannot transfer the new setting to the Edge without a functional Bluetooth or USB connection.

  • I went through and did all of that; the deleting and repairing allowed me to sync to my phone via Bluetooth... but still generate an error trying to connect to the local wifi.
    Thanks!
