Inconsistent app behavior and confusing calorie count.

Hi,

I've read similar posts regarding calorie counting queries but none are quite like what I'm experiencing.

I normally burn 2000 calories a day without exercising. On the 20th I went for a ride, burnt 2323 calories, making my total calorie burn for that day 4,321 - Which makes sense.

The next day I went for a ride and burnt 1,075 calories however Garmin reports my total burn as 2,028 which seems low - I'd expect it to be around 3000, yet for some reason it lists the correct amount under 'Yesterday' just not under 'Calorie Details'

Some days it totals to an expected amount while others it doesn't.

Is anyone able to explain this inconsistency?

  • You resting calories will always be the same value after a full day. It is the calories needed to keep you alive. Active calories are calories burned only while doing physical, non-sedentary activities such as walking or working out.
Active calories are not the same as activity calories. Activity calories are what you burn for an activity including the resting calories for that time.

Your ride on the 20th didn't burn 2323 kcal since that is the active calories without the resting calories and you probably did something else during that day that counted as active. To see the activity calories you need to check the logged values in the activity. You can see resting, active and total calories.

  • According to strava I burnt 2,167 on the 20th doing a 78 mile ride.

So it makes sense the total calories on the 20th was about 4,321 (2000 daily plus 2100 for the ride + 200 from walking around the house)

    By that logic,

On the 21st I burnt about 1000 calories on a 38 mile ride and 2000 daily so you would assume my daily total would be 3000.

So why is it reporting it as 2,028?

  • Is it really reporting 2028 now? The resting calories for yesterday should be at least 1998 kcal.

  • Yes correct.

It should be reporting closer to 3000 and this has happened multiple times.

  • The Calories screen for the June 21st appears to show an old result from the mid of the day. Either it stayed in the app cache, or it was not properly synced. First of all try syncing again. Then have a look at Garmin Connect Web, whether the right data is there. Then force the GCM app to stop (swipe it up in App Switcher), start anew, sync, and check the calories for the 21st again.

  • Swiping up and restarting the app did the trick. Thank you.

    21st now shows:
