Unable to change heart rate zones to customized bpm in forerunner 255. it says I should be able to, but I can't.

I just got a new Forerunner 255. When I go into my device Settings via the Connect mobile app, to change the heart rate zones, each zone just gives me a dial with one number option (the number range is severely limited). I want to customize these zones like I was able to do with old 920xt. With that device I was able to input actual numbers.

I'm not sure if I'm explaining this correctly, but my Warm Up zone 1 should be 120-136, but when I tap this section the dial I get says Heart Rate with options on from 57 to 107. Each zone only gives one option. When I select a number in this dial, nothing happens.

Anyone else?

  • Hi! I had the same issues - all of them with my new Forerunner 225. I'm new to the Garmin, so I thought I just don't know how to set everything up. But after a while of trying it seems like it's not working properly.

I tried to configure my HRZ manually via BPM and ran into the same issues. The range of the HRZ dial was very limited. After some back and forth it suddenly showed me a wider number range (I was just going back out and into the dial) so I could finally setup all my 5 zones.

Then I went back out of the HRZ setting to synch my watch and when I went back in a few minutes later everything was set back to the default. Same on my watch which I just synched. I tried this a couple of times, also setting up a specific running HRZ, and on top set my HRZ on my watch manually up as well. So far so good.

Unfortunately, the custom HRZ don't work with custom workouts. At least I still get the default HRZ when I do any of the workouts I created.

Is there a way to edit my HRZ via Garmin connect web? I cannot find anything in my connect account.

There are up to four HR Zone tables (on most Garmin watch models): a general HRZ, running HRZ, cycling HRZ, and swimming HRZ. So depending which type of workout you do, the corresponding table will be loaded and used (if it exists). Also, if you based the HRZ on the %max HR, or %LTHR, and have the auto-detection of Max. HR resp. LTHR enabled, then the table will dynamically adjust each time the base value changes.

Some older models have also an interface for the settings on GC Web, but the more recent ones can be only set up through the app, or directly on the watch.

I cannot speak for the FR225, since I never tested it, so cannot exclude a bug there, but the HRZ settings works without problems on the models I tried.

  • Can confirm it did not hold my changes again. Went back in and it had reverted to %LTHR.
