TWO MISSING FEATURES

Garmin - I'm LOVING my new Forerunner 955 watch! Best Garmin tech yet, and I have a lot of your stuff.

TWO things I need. Both are easy and obvious (to me). And I'm sure generally desired. Thanks!

  • Please add INTENSITY MINUTES to the Physio TuneUp. Really want my cycling workouts on the EDGE to credit my those hard minutes. My EDGE knows the info, but that metric is left out. So my "My Day" is wrong.
  • Please add RECOVERY TIME as an option to view in the MY DAY report. I can click on Training Readiness to see the factors and it is buried in there... but add it to the MY DAY report.
Thank you!!
  • Edge units do not calculate intensity minutes so it first needs to be added to those devices, but I don't think Garmin will add it since Edge units are not activity trackers. You should wear your activity tracker (FR955) and let it calculate the intensity minutes during the ride.

  • What are Intensity Minutes? Just time in higher zones? My Edge does report on my time in each Zone, both HR and Power. So why wouldn't Garmin Connect know how to report on minutes that were intense? Just curious. The EDGE device itself doesn't have to show it. But via Psysio Tuneup, that "cycling activity" should contribute to the data shown on your Activity Tracker (watch). Most cyclists that ride with a $600 Edge cycling computer don't really want to also wear a $600 Watch while cycling. Not needed, and just a risk of destroying it if you end up sliding down the road. My body heals, but I'm worried about my bike and my watch LOL.

  • What are Intensity Minutes? Just time in higher zones?

Depends on the settings, but by default it is the time spent over the threshold calculated with the help of the average Resting Heart Rate. The RHR changes daily, and since Edge is not supposed to track your Resting HR, it does not support this feature. IMs are simply not available with Edge, unless you use the HRM-Pro chest belt too (see the FAQ for the IM on HRM-Pro). Not telling it could not be done, but apparently Garmin decided differently. You can suggest them the change at Submitting an Idea to Garmin

  • Everything is calculated on the device so the Edge must have the function for "Intensity minutes" implemented before it can send that value via Physio TrueUp. That is just how it works with Garmin devices. The values are not calculated in Garmin Connect on the servers.

The same thing with training load. That is why you are required to sync the Edge before each ride to download the training load via Physio TrueUp and make the Edge calculate the same load value as on the watch. If you don't do that the load values might get out of sync between the devices.

  • OH! Interesting. I didn't realize I had to sync my EDGE *before* my ride to normalize the load calc. I assumed load was a standalone value generated simply by the effort of that particular workout. I know Garmin did update the LOAD formula recently and older devices used a different formula. But the EDGE 1030 did get the new formula update. I actually do fire up Garmin Connect Mobile before each ride, so I get notifications on my EDGE... so that generally initiates a pre-ride sync.

  • Thanks! That helps me understand the concept better. I do have a default RHR in my profile, but I know mine varies between low to high 40s, depending and the EDGE doesn't know that.

  • The load value per activity is probably standalone, but the load focus and 7-day load aren't.
