Why is location always on?

iOS 15.3.1

Garmin Connect 4.51.1.3

Device: Garmin Instinct 2s

iOS setting: Allow location always

I don't have Garmin Connect running the background, half the time I don't even half the watch on, and yet recently, the Navigation icon (triangle) is constantly in the status bar. What gives?

Is setting location to 'Always' the only way to get weather? If so, couldn't that be a 1/hr check or so?

Or is this related to the SOS function? My phone is getting warm in a way it never has been and I'm confused.

I am considering removing weather from the watch face and changing location setting to "while using" but don't know what all that affects.
