Anaerobic Shortage

Under "Load Focus" the Garmin app generally tells me that I have an "Anaerobic Shortage" in my training. For example right now it is saying between Feb 8 - Mar 7 that I only have 20 mins of Anaerobic training.  I went through all my rides in that period and added up all the minutes of Anaerobic and Neuromuscular (the step above Anaerobic) and calculated 52 mins.  Why is Garmin app ignoring those minutes

  • It isn't minutes. It is the load value you should use.

  • Its your focus based upon your training for the last month.  Maybe its not minutes but its some other metric related to what was done from Feb 9 - March 8 as stated below.

So my Garmin suggested workout today was this.

So I do the workout and actually do the 10sec intervals higher than the suggested 530W. I average 600W. The Workout summary is as follows:-

And it barely moves the needle  on the Load Focus.

Despite focusing on high power anaerobic efforts this last week, it's showing me way below the optimum range.  Looks like I'd have to do insane amounts of Anaerobic training to fall within the optimum range.

  • The exercise load for the activity load as 76.

It was divided into 17 anaerobic and 58 high aerobic. That totals to 75. Values are rounded so it looks ok.

The max heart rate look a bit low. What is your max HR? Are you using optical HR or chest strap? Chest strap is a must for intervals since optical HR is too slow.

The load focus is the sum for a whole month. You got 17 in one activity. You will probably need about 20 of those activities to reach the range.

Very important is to have the correct heart rate settings. Too high settings will make it really hard to reach that target. Setting it too low will not give correct results. It need to be as correct as possible.

You also need to look at your training. Do you really do training that will reach anaerobic load?

  • Thanks for your replies. Couple of interesting things you say. I am pretty sure I am doing anaerobic work, but I am basing that on time in power zones of Anaerobic and Neuromuscular and interestingly you are commenting that my HR needs to be correct, which suggested that Garmin is calculating my anaerobic work based on Heart Rate (or maybe combination of both HR and Power) For me I rarely get my highest HR on max anaerobic efforts because I can only do those with shorter intervals such as 30 seconds or less, although I've seen high HR with 1min intervals with power numbers which would fall into anaerobic power range. I believe my HR numbers are correct because I base them on Threshold notifications I get from Training Peaks.    20 anaerobic focused activities in one month would be unrealistic for me because my total activities in a month ranges between 23-26.

  • It looks like training effect is based on heart rate and speed or heart rate and power depending on what data is available and type of activity: https://www8.garmin.com/manuals/webhelp/forerunner935/EN-US/GUID-7275629E-743A-4658-A284-C84F42A66AE5.html#:~:text=Anaerobic%20Training%20Effect%20uses%20heart,and%20the%20type%20of%20activity

To get correct results I guess the FTP also needs to be correct.

To me it looks like your HR values could be set too high or that your heart rate readings are too low. Are you using a chest strap?

  • You are right. Power Zones are based on your FTP. I found I wasn't getting significant credit for anaerobic efforts because my FTP was set higher than I tested.
