Is BT connection of Fenix 5 plus with iPad not supported? Do I need an iPhone for that?

I tried pairing my Fenix 5 plus with an iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 6. gen. The GC app on either iPads keep telling me to turn on BT, which is already and working with other devices, e.g. head sets. When I attempt the same with and iPhone XR the GC connect app recognizes the watch right away.

Are iPads not compatible with Garmin watches?

  • iPads are compatible, but you might be having difficulty because the watch is designed to sync to only one mobile device. I typically use my phone for syncing and the iPad for viewing the data.

  • Understood. So how do I make the watch forget that it was ever connected with a phone?  I thought going through the same process as one would do to initially pair with a phone would suffice. I tried have this but it did not work.

To avoid any misunderstanding, I am not looking to have the watch paired with multiple IOS devices at the same time.... just to one of my iPads instead of my iPhone.

  • how do I make the watch forget that it was ever connected with a phone?
    • From your phone's Garmin Connect Mobile app go to More >> Garmin Devices >> Select your Fenix 5
    • Select 3-dot icon in upper right corner >> Remove Device
    • Close the app then go  iPhone >> Settings >> Bluetooth
    • Under My Devices click on the "i" icon to the right of the Fenix 5 >> Forget This Device
    • Reboot the iPhone
    • Place your Fenix 5 in Bluetooth pairing mode
    • From the iPad open the Garmin Connect mobile app
    • Select "Add New Device" then follow the onscreen instructions
  • That's exactly the process I use to pair the watch with the phone (and tried with the iPads). I usually add a watch reboot before I try to pair.

Again, for some reason the GC app on the iPads does not recognize either a watch or a BT connection.
