iOS 15 Focus Mode Feature Request

With the release of iOS 15 and its new notification management options, the Garmin Venu (and presumably all Garmin smartwatches with notification capabilities) does not properly support them.

Focus mode

All focus modes are handled as Do Not Disturb was handled on iOS14 and earlier. No notifications notify on the watch, even though they are configured as allowed apps and contacts within the focus mode's settings and notify on the phone as expected.

Notification summaries

When notification summaries are enabled, all notifications still notify on the watch in real-time even though they do not on the phone.

Overall

It seems likely that these are iOS limitations that Garmin can't work around, just like being able to choose which apps notify on the watch is available on Android but not iOS.

But truthfully, that's really all I want so I can have only a select few apps buzz my wrist. I know iOS doesn't support filtering which notifications are sent to the device, but it seems feasible that Garmin could solve this by filtering on-device. In this scenario, all notifications would still be sent to the watch but the watch would choose which to display.

  • I truly enjoy the tracking and how well the watch integrates with my edge head unit, but I need my notifications to work the way they are intended to work.  If Garmin is going to say they support iOS, then they need to support iOS.  Not just partial when they choose to.  If this isn't fixed soon I will move back to the Apple Watch and switch to Wahoo head units.  At least from what I have seen from some research is Wahoo takes integrating more seriously.  Garmin is falling behind in key areas where other companies are improving and surpassing them.

Plus the the areas that Garmin sell as a benefit seem to be working less.  Lately I am increasing getting an abnormal heart rate warning on my watch when I am doing a cycling work out with my edge head unit.  What That??????

  • All-

We currently have a feature request submitted requesting that, while the paired mobile device running iOS 15 is in Focus mode, notifications appear not only in the Garmin device's notifications widget (which they currently will - see the FAQ linked below) but ALSO will pop-up on the screen of the device (which they currently will not).  This is not a guarantee of this feature being integrated into the Garmin Connect mobile app, but, if it is, and you have been added as a requesting user, you will be notified via email, should this feature be implemented.

If you would like to be added to this feature request, please tag me and answer the questions below:

    1. May we, if necessary, have permission to email you?
    2. May we, if necessary, have permission to view/access your Garmin Connect account?
    3. In what country do you live?

My Garmin Device Is Not Receiving Smart Notifications from My Phone

  • I appreciate your response.  My major compliant is that focus modes was announced in June 2021.  Garmin should be more responsive to feature changes.  Apple makes beta software available to both developers and non-elopers.  Garmin if they cared would have tested focus modes on the many wrist based devices that their customers use each and everyday.  Seeing how focus modes impacts notifications on iOS based devices this should've been implement and submitted in time of iOS 15 release.  The non-responsiveness comes across as a lack of care to customers that spend good money on your products.  This happens time and time again as noted in these forums.

    To answer your questions:

    1. May we, if necessary, have permission to email you? Yes
    2. May we, if necessary, have permission to view/access your Garmin Connect account? Yes
    3. In what country do you live? United States

If you need beta testers of the Garmin Connect app, I am offering to do testing.  Anything to get Garmin to do what they should already be doing.

    1. May we, if necessary, have permission to email you? Yes.
    2. May we, if necessary, have permission to view/access your Garmin Connect account? Yes.
    3. In what country do you live? Canada.
  • Garmin community:

I wish all of you waiting for Garmin to support Focus Modes, a feature that Apple announced in June during the annual WWDC, good luck.  As nearly another month has gone by and no communication and no software release to support a feature announced and released by Apple with an API (Application Programming Interface) I have returned to using a Apple Watch.  I am selling the Fenix 6S Sapphire and will determine whether I want to move away from Garmin all together.

It is truly unfortunate that Garmin has chosen to be mute and take no direct action to support a feature that so many users have requested.  To support this feature it would not take much effort by Garmin.  I have spoken to an Apple developer and they stated that the API released by Apple makes it trivial to support focus modes.  It comes down to Garmin wanting to implement the feature and to care about their customers.  Apple announced the feature five months ago and no action.

Good luck to the rest of you still using Garmin watches with an iPhone.

  • I'm not sure what changed, but did anyone notice these are working now!? I've been wearing an Apple Watch and my Fenix 7 together for about a week to test smart notifications. I barely even noticed the focus modes were working until last night. My iOS app says it was updated a few days ago and can't remember the watch updating anytime in the last week, but it seems to be working! So relieved.

    iOS app version: 4.53.1.2

    Fenix 7 software version: 7.35

  • All,

With the release of iOS 16, now notifications from excepted apps will show on a wearable with Focus Mode enabled.  If you are experiencing this after updating to iOS 16, please start a new thread.
