Can I choose to prioritize edge chest strap heart rate monitor over fenix watch when cycling only?

Hi. I cycle fairly frequently but recently also bought the fenix6 S pro solar to track my general fitness metrics whilst in the gym, sleeping etc. I believe the chest strap which comes with the edge 530 cycle computer will be more accurate than that given by the watch; can I therefore choose to synchronize the edge / my details generally with the heart rate information received by the chest strap solely when I’m cycling, and rely on the watch for the heart rate data the rest of the day? If anyone can help with this question I’d be grateful thanks !

  • The heart rate from the chest strap will be used for the cycling activity, but I don't think it will be used for the daily summary. Those values comes from the activity tracker (the watch). I just checked a ride I did and the heart rate values in the daily summary is not even close to the values from the ride.

Edge cycle computers do not calculate intensity minutes and other health values so it will use the wrist heart rate from the watch. To get more accurate values you can start an activity on the watch during your cycling and use the heart rate from the chest strap. After the cycling just discard the activity on the watch.

  • Thank you so much, this is extremely helpful. When you say “use the heart rate from the chest strap”, does it give you the option to pick up one or the other, or will it do so automatically?

  • If you've connected the chest strap to the device it will be used automatically when you put the strap on. It will only be used when an activity is started. The only exception is the HRM-Pro which is an activity tracker on its own.

  • Hi me again...I did that and deleted the activity, at which point I lost all the other data from the watch...is the key to discard rather than delete? I left it on the watch and eventually it auto-saved...

  • Sorry, to be clear when I say I lost all the activity I meant the extra info on training load which the watch gives but which the edge does not.

  • Edge 530 supports training load, but maybe you need a power meter. I'm not sure.

It shouldn't matter if you use the Fenix or the Edge. Both calculates training load the same way.

But if you get training load on the Fenix and not the Edge then just discard the activity on the Edge instead and save the one on the Fenix.
