VA won’t sync to iPhone during an activity

Hello,

Garmin Device: Vivoactive 3.
Platform: ios. (iOS 13.7).

Issue: Watch won’t sync during my activity operating. Once the activity is ended the watch will sync. A message that the device is busy is returned when attempting to sync via the Watch Settings menu within Garmin Connect.

For the last few years I have been able to sync the watch to iPhone during an activity - say Walk - whether initiated by myself via the activities menu or if MoveIQ started it.

Since the last few days I have encountered the experience described in “Issue” above. I have noticed, this could be coincidence (in technology terms do we believe in those?) there is a gap between my steps and heart rate data for a period of approximately 30 minutes on the day it last seemed to work.

I have tried a soft reset on the watch - disconnected it from the iPhone and paired again. But the issue persists.

The actual activity will sync once stopped and saved on the watch

i appreciate any ideas regarding this.

Thank you.

  • This is per design. You can't sync while an activity is running.

What is it you want to sync during the activity? The activity can't be synced since it is still running.

  • Thanks for your reply. I could accept such but I have had this device working as per what I’ve mentioned is now not working as such for over two years.

I like to see my updated heart rate as I’m walking. Be this indoor or outdoor. If I see the heart rate is a little high over a short period of time I slow my pace down a little.

  • So, it isn't really syncing you are talking about. It is just the real time heart rate widget that you want ?

I checked now and that widget is updating for me during an activity.

  • The real time heart rate as like the steps do update. But when you tap into the card the ‘newer data’ is not there. The My Day data is point in time only. Hence why I regularly sync’d the way to the iPhone during an activity to check the Heart Rate data via the HR timeline.

i have used the watch and the GC app on this same phone the way I suggest for the March 2019. It is only since Thursday of this week this experience for myself began. And I have done it regularly as well not just infrequent.

the Message about the device busy I have never seen before.

it also very much syncing I am talking about - it would do it automatically for me when I opened the app during an activity as it still does when not in an activity.

  • Both the heart rate and steps is updated during an activty for me. It isn't because the watch is syncing. The data you see is what is displayed on the watch. The sync of the real data will occur when a real sync occurs after the activity.

  • So for you when you click into the heart rate you see the timeline chart updating ?

  • No. For that you need it to sync and you can't sync during an activity.

I can't remember if I've tried syncing during an activity earlier than in April this year. In April it said I can't sync during an activity.
