Copy gps file from Google Drive to Connect is unreliable.

This problem has been bugging my for years. Some GPX files in Google drive work perfectly to load to Connect.  Other will not show the Connect icon as an option when I select "Open in" from Google drive.

Here is the strange things about this. If I export a file from Basecamp it works fine.  If I create a GPX file in notepad and paste the text from teh basecamp file, it no longer opens in Connect. That and other experimenting tells me it has nothing to do with the actual formation of the GPX.

From what I can tell it has to do with Drive recognising the file as an "unknown file type, in which case it opens in connect vs recognising it as "xml" in which case it will not open to connect.

I would greatly appreciate any insight into this that might help make this problem go away.

  • You are trying this in the Connect Mobile iOS app or Garmin Connect Web? Could you zip then attach examples of working and non-working GPX files?

  • Connect Mobile iOS app.

It doesn't matter what the content of the GPX file is, but rather how Drive classifies them based on how they are created. This link has three GPS files that are internally the same, but were placed on Drive differently.  Drive sees them as different types, despite the same content and extension.

  • Yes. Somehow Google Drive is seeing 2 of these as XML files and therefore unable to open in Connect. I typically use OneDrive and I was able to open all 3 of those and import as a course into Garmin Connect Mobile iOS without problems.

On OneDrive they appear as generic icons...

    But on Google Drive...

Garmin Test 004.gpx - Using the Google Drive app I'm able to "Open in" then "Copy to Connect." Opens the Course Setup on the app.

GPSV Test 004.gpx & Notepad Text 004.gpx - no option to open in Connect. FWIW, I also tested on my android phone and was able to open with Connect from Google Drive and OneDrive.

That doesn't really help you other than you might consider a different file sharing site, other than Google Drive, at least for these Garmin Connect tasks.

  • Thanks seilogramp for further investigating the info is helpful.  I'll keep scratching my head until I find a solution that works. I've posted the question at G drive help. I'll see what comes up there too.

They probably won't consider using OneDrive, but they might suggest you get an android phone Grinning. Hopefully they'll give you some other guidance.

  • An android phone won't really help because I need the file to work for other users.  OneDrive might. But since I use Workspace/GSuites, the change is non-trivial and will take some time to look at and understand since I can't migrate everything over there.
