Why is there no activity for Calisthenics?

I would like to have an activity for Calisthenics seem like pretty basic and common activity?

  • That would be “cardio” for calisthenics.  You can use it generically while working out or you can create custom cardio workouts and sync them to some watches, not sure what watch you have.  Under “more”, “training”, “create custom workout” you can select cardio and the exercises and reps you are doing.

  • Yes! Calisthenics really should have it’s own heading. Some suggest using ‘strength’ but calisthenics also unclouded stretching and movements that aren’t strength builders. Yoga is similar but still quite a different practice. Some suggest to use cardio, and cardio is often done with no, or at least minimal, equipment like calisthenics; must most people I know who do calisthenics aren’t referring to their cardio workouts like running and jumping jacks etc when they say calisthenics; most of calisthenics has little to do with cardio for most who do calisthenics.

  • Agree, Calisthenics definitely should have it's own path. I have Fenix 6 and tried any mentioned options (Cardio, Strength, HiiT), tried to record my workout and edit it later, no one of them doesn't help and it's really difficult to found suitable exercises in available list. Most of them not available...

P.S. To be honest with you, next time I'll think twice when I choose my SmartWatch...

  • I would like to see more calisthenics exercises under strenth training if needed.

  • I agree and what is really bad is that the analysis shows this type of work out as "Having no training effect" on the connect app!  I can only assume no one at Garmin has tried calisthenics as it is 100% fantastic for whole body training, strength, control, balance, flexibility and it makes you sweat loads too. I love it and just wish the 40 minutes a day I do could at least be seen and recorded as a worthwhile effort for my overall health, fitness, weight management and personal wellbeing.

The Training Effect is based on your heart rate during the activity, not on the name or the type of the activity. If you got no Training Effect, then either your HR was not elevated enough for a sufficient time, or your device does not support that feature, or there was another problem, but it is definitely not a problem of the activity type. I get Training Effect even at Yoga sessions.

Read more about the Training Effect feature, and how it works in the following document:

  • I understand what you say, however, my heart rate over doubles during these 30 minute work outs and I can feel the effort and see the results in my physique after continuous training, so maybe it is more of a case that if I tell my Garmin device that I am recording a workout for my own records it could apply a nominal value to that type of effort if my heart rate is not doing it  for the app.  That way I would be able to see my efforts over time and see where I was consistent or lazy rather than have the app say what I did "had no training effect" when it is very clear it did.

Please bear in mind, I am using this and Strava to stay motivated and consistent so a training record of time and effort put in is valuable even if I do not hit anaerobic thresholds.

Under which type of activity exactly do you record your workouts on the watch?

  • I have had to add Calisthenics as an edit as it does not appear in the lists offered

  • Create you custom Calisthenics activity as a copy of Strength, and it will record the Training Effect too.
