Jeff Galloway 5K - extreme?

I am following the Garmin Coach 5K Run with a Time Goal: 37:30

I have been doing all the drills etc, and I’m on Week 12 of 13.

 

The long run and the speed intervals seem to have become extreme:

The next long Run Walk Run is 8 miles.

The next Speed Repeat drill includes 12 x 400 meter runs at a challenging pace.  

 

These seem extreme to me. Is there a mistake? Or is there a reason for such a heavy training load for a 5K?

  • I find this also extreme. It’s the same for the 10k plan which I’m following now. When registering for it I said that I ran 9-16km per week. I found the program a bit much as only I was getting back into running after a couple of months and only to find myself having to do an 11km long run as the 4th exercise. Decided to stop and re-register for the same plan indicating that I run only 1-9km per week. Hoping that the program was a easier to get into. In the end its a 3-4 month program. I get the exact same plan! Just did the 2nd week and already at 26km per week. Last run included 8x 800m at a pace of 4:59-5:12 p/km. I love the challenge, love the type of exercises and feel good about making it through the week but this will get me injured pretty soon. The program clearly doesn’t adapt or take the data from the entry form very serious. I might want to change to one of the standard HR based programs. 

  • I told the program I run 30 km a week, and it' giving me these little half hour workouts. My Sunday run is 1605 metres -- i.e. a mile -- of run-walk-run. I think if I run hard for four minutes, and walk for 30s I can finish the mile before the next four minutes are up. I came here to see if this was normal and have seen so much craziness -- someone reported 18 x 800 m speed repeats -- and that the watch doesn't support the run-walk-run intervals, that I'm thinking of firing this "coach."
