My VO2max is decreasing. It’s now at 41! Almost in the red zone!

I’m not as fit as I was in early summer, when I was running 5k in 26mins and 10k in 55mins. I do still run predominantly orienteering and running as if I am orienteering (due to lockdown). So running off track, in mud, pools of water, through brambles, up and down steep embankments etc. My running speed and endurance is down at the moment, but for a 39 year old, I am most definitely not in the lower fitness range for my age. I ran 7k the other day, in an hour, in extremely muddy and hilly and cold conditions (using MapRun orienteering control points) I was not grasping for breath. Why is my VO2 Max suggesting I’m barely capable of walking? I happily acknowledge that I’m am not as fit as I was, but will be again I’m sure. I just don’t believe that my vo2max should be on the red/amber border!
