Garmin forerunner 35 inconsistent map

Former Member

I'm getting an inconsistent start point on my run.  Although the total time, lap time and other features track my whole run, the map data starts from between 1 and 2 miles in.  Once the data is uploaded in Strava, it only starts from where the map starts.

For example, yesterday I did a run and the map started from the start of mile 2 and it even knows that by saying "2" on the map.

I've got the latest version of the App but any advice welcome, as it's super annoying!

  • Are you experiencing the same issue when viewing the activities on Garmin Connect Web? Are you making sure to get a solid GPS acquisition before you start the activity? Are you actually starting an activity and not waiting for Move IQ to do it automatically for you?

    • Select Runner symbol, and select an outdoor activity profile
    • Go outside, and wait while the device locates satellites
    • Select Runner symbol to start the timer.

Could you insert the FIT file from Garmin Connect Web so we can take a closer look?

    • This will download your activity in compressed zip format.
    • Insert the zip file into your post

    Hi,

Yes, the issue is the same in Garmin Connect Web.

Yes, I use the Run Outdoor activity profile.  How would I know if the device locates satellites? I do get the "Wait" but normally click through this to start the run.

See attached the ZIP file from my run yesterday where the distance is correct (9.28 miles) but the map starts from around mile 2.  N.B. I started and finished in the same place.  '

    Many thanks!

  • Are all activities like this? On this FIT file there is definitely no positional data until 17 minutes into the run.

I do get the "Wait" but normally click through this to start the run.

I would get in the habit of waiting a little longer for a GPS signal. Wait until you get all 5 bars and it says Ready before you begin your run

Also try syncing with Garmin Express, then let the watch sit outside for a while before your next run.

If still no joy, it could be an issue issue with the watch vs Garmin Connect. Either with corrupt files or an expired or damaged ephemeris data file (epo file). On the forum I've seen a lot of issues with corrupt files with this particular Forerunner model.

    • Verify all activities are synced with Garmin Connect.
    • Plug the watch into a computer
    • Open the device hard drive
      • Windows:
        • Open File Explorer
        • Click on This PC
        • Click on the Forerunner 35
      • Mac
        • Open Finder
        • Go to Computer
        • Click on the Garmin Drive
    • Once in, open the GARMIN folder
    • Delete the REMOTESW folder
    • Open the ACTIVITY folder
    • Delete the contents of the ACTIVITY folder
    • Sync with Garmin Express
    • Once successfully synced with Garmin Express, remove watch from computer, restart the watch then take it outside with a clear view of the sky and let it sit for about 30 minutes.
