Connect 4.37 no longer syncing with with Apple Health.

This morning (I’m in Europe), 13. Nov 2020, Garmin Connect had updated to v4.37 overnight.

Now Connect will sync with my Approach S60 and my Index Smart Scale, but not with Apple Health - and what’s more, all the previous data for the last few years have been deleted from Apple Health as well. The data is in Connect, but not in Health.

iOS version 14.1

  • Ha! And I thought I did something to cause the data to be wiped out. I had the same thing happen. Anyway, I have a sleep issue to add to this pile.

Sleep data does not sync correctly to Apple Health. When a sleep session is synced, the Light, Deep and Awake cycles are synced correctly however the REM sleep cycle data is completely missing. This causes added gaps in the sleep records in Apple Health and makes the sleep data incorrect because the REM data is missing from the Asleep data in Apple Health. This did not used to be an issue but it is now using latest iOS and Connect apps. I am using the Fenix 6 Sapphire, running latest official 12.20 firmware.

  • This is pretty much the last straw for me with Garmin. Can anyone explain what the point of a fitness/health tracker is that isn’t capable of safely securing your fitness and health data?

  • This is pretty much the last straw for me with Garmin.

If Apple Health integration is your number 1 critical feature, suggest moving to a complete Apple ecosystem with the Apple Watch. Seems same issue is on the fitbit forum - Third-Party Integrations - Fitbit Community

  • Yup I’m aware of the Fitbit / Apple Health integration issues. I chose Garmin specifically because the integration *was* working.

  • As outlined below it is something we are working on with along side apple to get a solution for customers, once the update is released if they still have issues it will need to be directed to apple, thanks.

    Kind regards,

Latest response from Garmin so guessing that they won’t be working on it further now they’ve updated the app

So is it still not working even after the 4.37.1 update?

  • Guys, not exist magic solutions, that’s how things are:

    1) if you want activities into apple health download rungap

It’s a third party app works very well, import data from your garmin account (or strava or other 30 dicferent system) and export in 30 different platform (include apple health).

It export in apple health not only distance of run like garmin but also map of your route, and hr graph during activitis.

    2) if you want export fitness data (steps, calories, hr during the day, sleepin, weight...) don’t have any chance, a part last month.

It’s an year that I try and I didn’t find any other solution, so or buy apple watch and use garmin only for run, otherwise that’s it.

  • I’d like to add one more item to this list - how Garmin Connect syncs Active Calorie data back to Apple Health. If I am using Strava (yes, Strava) then activities sync as soon as they are completed and they correctly reflect Active Calories of each individual activity in Apple Health. This results in Apple Health correctly tracking active calories and also closing the move rings for the day. Again, Strava sends the workout data to Apple Health with complete details, including active calories specifically associated to that activity. Now Garmin Connect does something entirely different.

Instead of syncing activities as they happen together with the correct active calorie counts to Apple Health, Connect dumps one large bucket of active calories to Apple Health at the end of the day. This does not work correctly because active calories are not associated to each activity resulting in an incorrect move ring progress throughout the day. Connect therefore needs to be updated to sync each activity as it is completed, together with all of the active calories *specific* to each activity. It should then simply calculate the balance of additional active calories at the end of the day by taking total active calories for the day, subtracting the active calories of activities and pushing the balance to Apple Health. This is the correct behaviour where as the current behaviour does not correctly capture any of the active calorie data.

Here are screenshots for the same workout, first the workout and related samples (missing) from Connect, and then Strava with the related samples there.

  • Keep it simple! Two weeks ago we had all our data in Apple Health and now we only have one month of data because GC had a bad revision.

  • Keeping it simple is fair enough, but they still need to know about it. I just want to raise awareness that the problems don’t stop at just missing data over time but the that data is missing even for the records that are being created.
