Issues connecting new Forerunner 245 Music

I am having trouble syncing with the Connect app. The watch says it is paired with the phone, and receives notifications (in settings, phone status: open app on phone). However, the Connect app doesn't think so. The app tells me that it's synced to my Garmin account but not paired to my phone. When I try to pair it manually (in watch settings), my phone is usually unable to find the device. Sometimes it does, though, and they attempt to connect. The progress bar (phone) and spinning ring around the Garmin logo (watch) appear. The progress bar gets about halfway before telling me that it's "Unable to pair your Garmin device." The watch also stops trying to pair and tells me to download the app. I have tried restarting the watch, app, phone, and deleting/re-downloading the app several times; it hasn't worked. It might be a software bug or my own technological ineptitude, but either way I can't pair my watch with the phone, or at least the app. Does anyone know how I can solve this problem?

  • It is possible the device is not paired properly and needs to be re-paired. Follow these steps.

From Garmin Connect Mobile app on your iPhone

    • Tap "More" >> Garmin Devices >> Select your connected device
    • Tap 3-dot icon on the upper right >> Remove Device >> Remove
    • Close the Garmin Connect Mobile app

Go back to the main menu on your iPhone

    • Open Settings >> Bluetooth
    • Under "MY DEVICES" tap the "i" icon to the right of your Garmin device
    • Tap "Forget This Device"
    • Restart your iPhone

Open the Garmin Connect Mobile app

    • Tap the "+" icon in the upper right
    • Select your watch from the list of Garmin devices
    • Put your Garmin watch in Bluetooth pairing mode.
    • Tap Start on the app and the iPhone
    • When prompted with "Bluetooth Pairing Request" enter the PIN (passkey) displayed on your Garmin device
    • When iPhone displays "Pairing Complete!" tap "Done"

I tried this. It worked until the last two steps. I entered the passkey, and they started to pair. However, just like before, the progress bar got halfway through, then said “unable to pair your Garmin device” and the watch told me to download the app. The watch still thinks it’s paired, and the app still thinks it isn’t.

  • At this point you'll need to contact Garmin Support. https://support.garmin.com

I have exactly the same issue you describe above.Did you get a solution? Thanks

  • Just received my 245 Music an have exacly the same issue described on the 1st post.

Do I have to send the watch back to Garmin?

  • Do I have to send the watch back to Garmin?

Try the repairing steps in the 2nd post, then if still not working contact Garmin directly https://support.garmin.com

  • I had this too. For me, what worked is going back into your phone's Bluetooth settings, again disconnecting and forgetting the device, then going back to the pairing process in the app and on the watch. I finally made it work this way.

  • Please try the process again, and then at the end, try removing the bluetooth device again. Then switch back to the app and pairing process. Worked for me.

  • I got stuck with this problem today and none of the above helped to fix it. I got this solved by removing the 245 bluetooth device from my iphone (forget device), update the Garmin Express app on my MacBook, get the watch connected to the USB connection on my MacBook, receive updates via Garmin Express. Then do a restart of the watch again. Then hook it up with the Garmin iPhone app and link as new device. After that I've managed to get connected again with my watch and phone and data is getting synced. What a ride. Not the best user experience as far as I can tell, Garmin! :-(
