My fenix 5 plus no longer working with my Apple phone

My fenix 5x plus has been working with my iPhone for a year.  Last week it disconnected from the phone. It won’t let me re-synch to the phone. I put the watch on “pairing phone” and open the garmin app where it finds my phone but is ultimately unable to connect. My phone in pairing mode seems to stay in “go to mobile app to add device” and doesn’t produce a pairing code for the phone.
