Bluetooth connection

I have a garmin forrunner 235 and Everytime i close my connect app on iphone my watch say "phone disconnected" does that mean my phone needs to always have it open in the background?

Not necessarily, unless you're doing a "live track" session. Mine does the same thing. Usually when my phone is not near my watch.

do you struggle with getting txt messages when that happens?

Yes, but I expect that since the phone has to be within Bluetooth range of the watch. Normally if the watch and the phone are in the same room, there are no issues.
