Unable to pair watch to new iPhone

I can’t get the connected sign to light up on my watch after receiving a new iPhone.

Do you have it connected to an iPad? I had the same problem. I thought it was because the watch can’t be connected to two devices. As soon as I turned off my iPad, I was able to connect to phone, but not the iPad. Just a thought.
