Steps etc sync, but the latest activity doesn't load to Connect. It does show on the watch. Have also tried manual upload into Connect on PC but get an error message "We don't support the file type you tried to import."

any special event happening with the watch during or after your activity ?
run your file through Fit File Tool's section remover
import this fit file manual from within Garmin Connect Web
when this fails
with your consent we can have a look at your file with FitFileRepairTool
zip the fit file and upload here in the forum, or provide a link to it on a cloud storage
when many files in your ACTIVITY folder, time for a backup/clean operation on that folder
