Apple Health displays double the calories and steps after physical activity.

Hello

after the latest update of Garmin Connect, Apple health displays the double of calories and steps after physical activity (e.g. running).
The values are correct in Garmin Connect, but if I open Health and ask to visualize the source data, I see that Garmin Connect is sending a packet with twice the value. As it was counting the calories, steps, and distance from running on top of the running itself.

Could you please check it?

Bruno

i use a Vivoactive 3, but I don’t think that the issue comes from the watch.

  • It doesn't seem like garmin is going to fix any of this, here's what I see as being options:

    - Hope apple comes out with their "extreme" edition watch, to compete with Garmin.  I'll happily jump ship if it's similar but with far better iOS / Apple Health integration

    - Use an apple watch

    - Use RunGap ($9.99/year).  It'll pull data from Garmin and push it to apple health, bypassing garmin.  Since garmin is blaming this on apple, but I can get the data to work fine via multiple third party apps, I doubt garmin has any desire to fix this. I mean, from a business perspective, they do complete with each other on some products, so maybe there's no incentive for them to bother.

    - Continue to deal with the crappy integration.  The other day garmin recorded double the caloires to apple health for a workout.  Really just great.

If I sound upset, it's because I've gone back and forth for months with garmin support on this, and they tell me it's apple's fault, but will never point out exactly why it's apples fault, and also can not tell me why other apps like Peloton, Strava and RunGap don't suffer from this problem.

If it was every once in a blue moon I could live with it, but the other day I had one workout recorded 11 freaking times.  Garmin: if you're reading this, please either push this fix or at least tell us you're not going to fix it, so we can make decisions going forward, using our wallet. A lack of updates means the same, I'll decide with my wallet.

  • A lack of updates

    There was an update

I am sorry for the confusion, we have an open ticket with activities duplicating themselves in Apple Health. Once we have a resolution, I will post on this thread with more information.
  • I honestly may have written the same post, line by line.

When Garmin says it's Apple's fault it's completely false, and they know that. They've chosen this version of the story as the best PR option, which is quite sad.

They know a proper sync doesn't work and won't work by design: easily interchangeable data is the best way to jump on the other ship. They need a proper locking mechanism to avoid us switching in a blink of an eye.

Garmin knows well that if Apple manages to produce a rugged version (which btw is already on the rumours) with maybe little less CPU power (which still would be several times the power of a Fenix) and 5 days of real usage, many of us with an iPhone will change the brand. I probably would.

  • HI there! I am sorry if there was a miscommunication that we put the blame elsewhere. That is not the case. As I mentioned above, we have a case opened on this and are investigating this issue. We are asking for patience as we work through this.

  • Hello! I am sorry for the frustration this has caused. As I mentioned a few days ago in this thread we are investigating this and I apologize for anyone who has put the blame elsewhere. We are asking for your patience as we work through the issue. As soon as I have an update, I will update this thread.

  • Hello Garmin-AmberD,

Thank you for taking on this new issue. As users we're frustrated by this kind of problems, especially when they're recurring, but as a software engineer myself I can also understand how bugs can creep in and fixes can slip in time.

I'd like to say that the part of the issue that I investigated (being of the trade) via some methodical number crunching seems to be solved.

Indeed, yesterday, according to the Garmin app, I did a 409 cal workout, had 2121 cal resting energy, and 880 active energy.

This data now checks out with Apple Health, which now correctly reports the same numbers in the right place, both in the main UI and in the Data Sources logs.

I cannot say exactly when it was fixed since as a workaround 9 months ago I disabled reporting for Active Energy from Garmin Connect in Apple Health (one can control that by tapping the avatar on the top right in Health, scroll to the Privacy section, and drill down in Apps > Connect).

Now, there might be other issues, but at least that one appears to have been resolved.

So, please share the love and send my thanks to the dev team for that one.

(below is a repost of the original issue I had, which now seems fixed)

On June 13 I had a significant workout, and a big overcount of calories in Apple Health.

That day, as recorded by my Garmin device, and as shown in Connect:

    - I burned a total of 3676 calories = 2136 resting + 1540 active.

    - I did a 2:05:29 workout for a total of 1016 calories.

    And in Apple Health:

    - In the Resting Energy section, I have a single sync event that day from Connect, totalling 2136 calories. This is value is correct.

    - In the Active Energy section, I have a single sync event that day from Connect, totalling 2556 calories. This value is incorrect: it should be 1540.

    - In the Workouts section, I have a single sync event from Connect, totalling a duration of 2:05:29 and 1016 calories. This value is correct.

    Now the issue struck me like lightning: 2556 = 1540 + 1016

Garmin Connect mistakenly sends the total of Connect's Active Energy plus Workout calories as Active Energy to Apple Health in a single sync event!

Hello! I really appreciate this kind feed back and your patience. Thank you!

  • Hello! I really appreciate this kind feed back and your patience. Thank you!

You're welcome, I know fairly well how it feels to be on the other end, and that people work their best not when they're shouted at but when they're encouraged to do their best (and that, as a company, the best way to reach that situation is to communicate more, not less).

FYI I do experience have the duplicated workouts issues (some not twice but a dozen times, all identical) which seems to be under investigation. It's less of an issue though, as Apple Health seems smart enough to collapse them into a single one, e.g the 409 cal 30min yesterday one is tallied once, but indeed shows two distinct yet identical sync entries.

  • Thank you! Do you mind if I share this with my team? All information we collect is helpful!

  • Thank you Amber - I realize that you did share an update, but as it's been going on for over a year, my confidence level in Garmin as a company to resolve the issue is .. honestly not great. It's not you personally, it's just the situation and the substantial amount of time and effort I've spent with Garmin support to no avail.
