Garmin connect & Live track

Do I have to run the garmin connect app in order to keep the connection with my edge in order live track/notification to work? Doesn't it run as a service in the background? If I close the app it terminated BT connection. On android devices I do not have to run the garmin connect app, it always connect via BT.

I tried with iphone but with no much success. It started, sent invites but the map never updated. When after 15km cycling I restarted garmin 520 it tracked the rest of the ride. Is it problem with the device garmin 520? Is it problem with live track? Why it doesn't retry to connect and update the map ? What I should do, to make sure it's working 100% all the time. When I race/ride 100-200km I do not have the time to check if it works or not. It must work. I never had problem using other apps like locatoweb.
