Connect IQ fails to start with "Error occurred"

I just got a Garmin Venu, but I’m unable to use the Connect IQ store. Whenever I try to start it on my iPhone, it prompts me to agree to the privacy policy and confirm that I’m of age. After checking both boxes and clicking next, I’m taken to a solid gray screen which just says “Error occurred”. I’ve tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app, but it has made no difference.
