Step count does not match kilometers

Today I hiked 17.3 kilometers and my step count is only 1414 steps.

Any idea what did happen with my Garmin Forerunner 630?

I often get a lower count when using hiking poles.

For that reason I sometimes take the footpod out from my running shoes when a correct count is important.

Hi thanks, that sounds reasonable, but I didn’t use hiking poles. I was thinking about soft ground, but a few days before on a glacier it did work correctly.
