Does Garmin Connect need to be running?

The Garmin Connect App needs to be running on my iPhone X for the auto upload, Live Track, and other features on my Edge 830 to work. I don't recall this being necessary on my Edge 1000. Certainly not for the upload. With the Edge 1000, it seemed to automatically "wake up" the app and connect. That is not happening with my 830. The 830 will continue to look for the phone until I start Garmin Connect.

Is this how I should expect it to operate or am I missing a setting?

For live track it does. It can be in the background but it needs to be running. For the others I am not 100% sure. My fenix and edge 1030 sync as soon as I get home from a ride or run but I also have my wifi turned on so I dont know if it syncs with the phone or wifi
