What is best activity type to record Treadmill Walking against?

Hi,

Is the activity type just a category/label or are there different calculations behind each activity type?

If it matters from a calculation perspective, what is best activity type to record Treadmill Walking against?

There is a Treadmill Running category but not a specific Treadmill Walking one? There are two Walking activity types: Casual & Speed?

I am walking at about 5 km/h currently; can any one advise how best I record the activity?

Thanks

M

  • I know this post is pretty ancient, but I had the same question.

The way I see it, the categories in Garmin Connect align pretty well with individual activities on Garmin's wearables, where they can be customized to use different sensors. From a measurement point of view, therefor, I don't imagine there's much difference between "Walking" and "Speed Walking", other than giving you another way to differentiate your activity records if you do a lot of both.

However, when I'm walking outdoors, I typically want to capture the GPS track along with the other metrics like step cadence, pace, etc.  That GPS information is useless when running on a treadmill, and can actually interfere with calculations if your wearable picks up an intermittent GPS signal and records a bunch of erratic "movement" (this happened to me on a stationary bike that was positioned close to a window).

Since there's no differentiation between treadmill walking and treadmill running, I just use the treadmill running activity and put "Walk" or "Mostly walking" in the title later -that way I can filter out indoor walks if I really need to. For my purposes, it doesn't really matter whether I was mostly walking, or steadily jogging, or doing intervals of some kind when I'm on a treadmill --the more significant difference is whether or not to activate the GPS receiver, and that's easier done at the activity level than remembering to turn it on and off in the outdoor "Walking" profile, based on whether I'm indoors or out.

Hope that helps. Anyone else have any suggestions?
