LiveTrack Contacts Data Grab

I am very disappointed in the changes Garmin has made to the Farmin Connect App. In order to continue use the Livetrack feature you have to sign over the access to all your contacts. This is nothing sort of a bulling data grab and Garmin should be assamed of this new policy.
  • Hi all,
The LiveTrack problem I'm having, is that I have it set for automatically send to my contact. Now, when I do an activity it says "LiveTrack Failed". If I start LiveTrack from the app, seems to be working correctly.
    Anyone with this same issue?
    Regards,
    Leo

    Fenix 5x sw version 12.40
    iOS sw 12.1.4
    GC Mobile version 4.15.0.28
  • Live track used to work well on iPhone 8 and 1030. Now this new contacts change has broken it. Approved and added contacts back - live track is enabled, but it does not start any more.

    What a mess!!

LeoPac72... also using a Fenix 5 and have the exact same issue. So much for safety!

Finally fixed by switching all the options off, switch back on and add contacts again. Now works again.
  • As for the questions regarding the contacts within the Garmin Connect App, with the announcement of the vivoactive 3 Music (Verizon) at CES 2019, we introduced Incident Detection and LiveTrack to wrist-worn devices along with a new Assistance feature. As part of our efforts to introduce this new functionality and allow the vivoactive 3 Music (Verizon) to use contact information for those features and phone-free text messaging, we re-examined how we handle contacts for all users and decided to make changes to better allow users to use contacts across features like LiveTrack and Incident Detection. Doing so also paves the way for future enhancements and functionality. The contact information is stored in Garmin Connect solely for the purpose of supporting these features and only includes those contacts you select to import from your phone or that you manually create within Garmin Connect.

I Understand that Garmin wants to add new functionality, and if people want to give any company access to their personal contact information that their choice.
Nothing you have stated explains why the previous method of manually entering a contact had to be removed! There is no valid reason provided so far for Garmin to force a customer to give this level of access to their information.

Please can you confirm that Garmin personal information management complies with the European Union GDRP privacy regulations?

A work-around to the 'you must grant access to your contacts list to use livetrack' problem appears to be to log out on Garmin Connect, and then log back in. You will still get nag popups telling you how wonderful your life would be if you shared your contact list with Garmin, but it's possible to enter email addresses directly.
  • ADM-UK - The previous method you referenced, of being able to invite recipients to a Live Track session by inputting their email address, is still available and has been improved.

When adding recipients to a LiveTrack session, users can choose to input email addresses for individual contacts, thereby creating a contact in Garmin Connect, or consenting users can now choose individual contacts from their mobile device address book and import those select contacts for use across Garmin Connect’s Safety & Tracking features. The choice of whether to manually enter contact information or save time by importing select contacts from their mobile address book is entirely up to the user and does not impact the functionality of Garmin Connect’s Safety & Tracking features.

For more on how we collect, use, and store your personal data when you use Garmin Connect on the web or the Garmin Connect Mobile app, I encourage you to review our Privacy Policy For Garmin Connect.
  • Another option that may work for a while until Garmin decides not to allow older versions, is to download 4.13.8. Just search for apk mirror. My problem with LiveTrack started with the 4.15 update. When I declined to sync my contacts with "secure" Garmin servers, LiveTrack quit. Matthew, if you say that I should be able to continue to use LiveTrack even if I don't consent to your contacts grab, why does it stop me from using it and how do I get that functionality back? I paid a lot of money for the device (935) and don't want the functionality to be cripled. If that's Garmin's "improvement" outlook, my outlook may change in the direction of other devices from other companies.
  • The app requests my contacts db but in no way I can give it access nor get through with Live Track.

Frankly I’m livid about this change Matthew. I see no way to be able to even check my previously manually entered contact info. Unless I consent to giving away all my contact data to Garmin this function is not working on my Edge 1000. I can’t emphasise enough how damaging this is to my trust in the brand you represent. I paid for the device with the features embedded. I have never consented to any additional use of my data. You need to explain to us how this is supposed to work as you say it should. Please do it quickly.
