Edge 520 / iPhone x Connection Freezing Device

Since the latest Garmin Connect app update, whenever my phone (iPhone X) connects to my Edge 520, the 520 freezes and becomes unresponsive. The only way I can rectify is to remove the device from my Garmin Connect profile, disable Bluetooth on my phone and hard reset my Edge 520. Tried reinstalling the app but not helped. Anyone else having this issue?
  • I have this same issue, iPhone 5S. All was peachy until the latest app update as you say. Switch 520 on and it acquires satellites, connects to hr, power etc. but when phone connects everything freezes. I rode last night with the phone Bluetooth off and the 520 was fine. I opened the app and then the 520 froze with "Phone Connected" across the top BUT the activity synced in the background, weird. Can't navigate using any buttons though. I've done a soft reset and factory reset, removed the 520 from the app and Bluetooth then re added, then deleted the app, reinstalled, then added the 520 back to the app (which it seems to start okay, then fails) - all the same result. If you restart the 520 (hold power button down for 15 secs) with your phone Bluetooth off (or with the device forgotten and the app closed), then the 520 will work fine. Am at a loss now how to rectify this other than just waiting for an app update, which I'm assuming is responsible.
  • Cheers for replying Steb. Everything you describe is exactly what I'm experiencing. When I contacted Garmin and reported the issue they implied it was coincidental that this problem had only started since the app update! As you say the only way my Edge 520 will function now is if I do not pair with my phone which is really annoying as it won't upload my activities.

During the last week I've run into exactly the same problem: E520 freezes when connected to the phone. In addition, a BLE_520 (phone and text functionality according to Garmin) makes unsuccessful attempts to pair with my iPhone X. I've tried to disconnect the E520 from the iPhone, but it keeps on connecting until it freezes up again.
  • Thank you all for your reports. We have created a case and looking into what caused this problem. I apologize for any inconvenience you have experienced due to this problem.
  • I have exactly the same problem. I thought it was the 12.90 firmware actually. I was already running the latest garmin connect app for a while, then updated the firmware of my edge 520 yesterday. As soon as the edge starts up and gives the message 'phone connected' everything freezes. The buttons still make sounds, but the screen is frozen.

Please fix this fast, as the only way to ride now is with Bluetooth off...

    Thanks Alastair
  • I tested this now on my Edge 520 with iPhone X as well as with Huawei Mate 20 Pro, I get the same Error on both devices.
    update.
I had a chat with Garmin online, I was told that Huawei has known issues, I tried to explain that it worked 100% for months, also on the iPhone. Referred me to dial a number in the UK. Interesting is that my Garmin 935 is still working fine, after the latest upgrade.

Same exact issues here with a 7Plus. Spoke to Support yesterday and my tech indicated it’s a known problem and they are working on it. I noticed it as soon as I updated to the newest GCM iPhone App.

Hurry up Garmin! It’s a PIA having to manually upload my ride!
  • Same here - need fix ASAP

Glad I found this post before I did hard reset

Same here. Like an epidemiological event Garmins around the globe are failing. Please Garmin fix and notify via all channels including Strava.

Having same exact issue. Day before app update all was good, day after 520 freezes. Grrrr. At least usb sync still works. Come on Garmin, fix it! (iPhone XR)
