Due to the nature of my work the device can only be, GPS receive only.
More specifically, "The device may have Bluetooth, Global Positioning Device (GPS) receive only, accelerometer, altimeter, gyroscope, heart monitoring, and vibration sensing capabilities; however, the device must not receive software or hardware updates that add features prohibited by this Instruction."

The term "GPS receive only" means a device can only receive a signal from GPS, or a system with built-in GPS, typically a mobile device. This feature is known as "side-along" or "connected GPS." A device that is GPS receive only or "connected GPS" cannot send out a GPS signal without being connect to a mobile device.

I run about 35 miles a week and that is my primary purpose of a device, that is tracking my workouts and syncing for keeping statistics. I also perform 5 HIIT workouts a week that I want to track as far HR and calorie expenditure. Mix in a few obstacle course races a year and lots of trail running.

On the market for a device that does these things, and most importantly meets the GPS requirements stated above.

I have been researching devices on Garmin website and don't clearly see the devices meeting this criteria and want to make sure before I invest the dollars that I will be able to use it.

Can you recommend a device(s) that meet this criteria?
  • Currently have a fenix 5 but don’t find the gps is the best in open water whilst freestyle swimming . Friends have forerunner 735 which seem better but is obsolete. Any others as good as the forerunner?
